Although in 1944 Villa-Lobos was known to a limited number of American musicians, his fame in Europe was well established. His best-known piano work was a suite of pieces dedicated to is wife, Lucilia Guimaraes Villa-Lobos, A prole do bebe no. 1. The work was first performed in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on July 5, 1922, by the pianist Arthur Rubenstein.
