The pieces in this collection range from the early Danse bohemienne of 1881, to the Album Leaf of 1916. even in the earlier works, when Debussy's melodic style was still occasionally guided by the facile grace of his first teachers, his harmonic refinement and his gift for sonority astonish us by their finesse and originality. Some of these early pieces contain prophetic anticipations of his later work and constitute a sort of liberation from the keyboard literature of his time.
